What we do
We create and tour new performance work that delights, provokes and inspires audiences by its quality, playfulness of form and richly layered narratives.
We aim to create an imaginative arena in our performances where people can dream, laugh, cry, reflect, question and discover fresh perspectives on their own lives and the society in which they live.
We make multi-layered, resonant work which crosses genres, pushes forms and challenge perceptions of what theatre can be and do, taking inspiration from disciplines such as architecture, visual and live art, and film. We explore themes relating to identity, memory and the body, often through scenarios of individuals and groups in extreme situations.
Shams was founded in 2001 by artistic director Jonathan Young, and since then has created seven original productions. In the last decade we have toured the UK extensively, played in numerous theatres, art centres, village halls and venues including BAC, the Pleasance Edinburgh, The Albany, mac and Roundhouse.
Our work has spanned visual theatre, immersive and site-specific performances, clowning, movement and dance, and used extensive video projection. Our work has been widely acclaimed with two nominations for Total Theatre Awards - in 2006 for The Garden and in 2010 for Reykjavik.
Our values
We respond to the distinctive needs of each project
We consider the form and process that will best serve the particular vision of a new project, so each show is highly distinctive and our work is constantly evolving.
We invest in the creative process
It typically takes between 18 months to two years from initial ideas to the performance of a new piece. A production is made in several stages with time in between research and rehearsals for reflection and re-visioning, ensuring the final product is the best it can be.
We strive to make work that not only looks good, but thinks well
Our aim is to create richly textured, poetic and intelligent work. Productions combine extensive research with detailed attention to all aspects of design and performance. Our shows often generate a strong individual response from people, allowing them to make connections to their own experience.
We value working collaboratively as an ensemble
From early on in a process, we work collaboratively with designers, theatre-makers and performers to create a unified world in a production.
